Composition Shingles

Composition Shingles

What are composition shingles?

Composition shingles are also called asphalt shingles. They are made with a fiberglass or organic base, covered with a layer of asphalt, then a layer of weather-resistant granules. These shingles are durable and a great value for homeowners, which is why they are the leading choice of roofing material. There are many styles of composition shingles from budget to designer, and many accessory options to go along with them. BJ Roofing can help you choose the best shingles for your roof! Architectural asphalt shingles (left) are laminated with an additional asphalt layer. This creates the contoured, dimensional look that mimics a "wood shake" look. Asphalt sealant bonds the layers, reinforcing the shingles’ waterproof capability. These shingles are available in a wide range of colors. Accented with high-definition ridge cap (far right), these shingles provide excellent protection on your roof with a classic look.
From the bold look of slate to a rugged wood shake look, to the look of hand-cut European style shingles - designer shingles are available in several styles and offer a custom look for your roof. If you are looking for a premium asphalt shingle, ask us about our designer shingles selection!
Accessories are an important part of the roofing process, and even allow you to put some individual style to your roof. Rolled valley metal (top left) is installed under the shingles to protect the valleys of your roof from water or ice. "W" valley metal (top right) serves the same purpose but is installed with the shingles only covering the edges, leaving the valley open for a different look. "W" valley metal comes in several painted color options, and we also offer a copper option.

Edge metal (sometimes called drip edge) is placed on the roof deck, hanging over the fascia board. This allows water to drip off the shingles and down the metal, protecting your fascia. There are two main styles. "G" edge metal (bottom left), is the standard edge metal. We also offer an upgraded "D" edge metal (bottom right), which extends slightly past the fascia to support the edge of the shingles, which prevents premature "curling" of the shingles over the edge metal. Both options come in a variety of colors to match your roofing or fascia.
Roof ventilation is important because it allows outside air to flow naturally upward and out of attic. This promotes a cooler and drier attic which prevents moisture from being trapped, which in turn helps prevent rotting and mildew. Proper roof ventilation also provides year-round, consistent ventilation without energy consumption.

There are several types of roof vents. The most common are can vents or box vents (top). These are installed over a hole cut in the wood sheeting, allowing air to flow from the attic and out the vent. Each roof will need several of these vents for proper air flow.

Ridge vents are installed on the peaks of your roof and allow for maximum air flow and ventilation for your attic space. A space is cut at the top of the wood sheeting, then the ridge vent is installed over the hole (bottom left). Finally, ridge cap is installed over the vent, giving a nice finished look (bottom right).
